About

Walmer Castle and Gardens offers a chance to step back in history, but also for kids to explore a castle with battlements with wonderful sea views! plus much of it has been recently given a sympathetic restoration to mark the 200th anniversary of the Battle of Waterloo, including a new multi media guide and a more authentic refinishing of Wellington's bedroom! It was originally designed a part of a coastal defence against France but became the official residence of the Lord Warden of the Cinque Ports.

The Duke of Wellington held this post for 23 years and died in an armchair there that can still be seen, along with an original pair of ‘wellington boots'. In recent years, both the Queen and Queen Mother have regularly visited the castle and you have a chance to see some of the rooms that were used by the Queen Mother on her visits. The gardens are also worth visiting as there is a moat, the Queen Mother's Garden plus a fascinating, working kitchen garden.

There are some beautiful trees to be seen on the Oval Lawn, Paddock and Woodland Walk plus a variety of wildlife throughout the year.
