The Wartime Tunnels at Dover Castle - Photo 1

About

The Wartime Tunnels at Dover Castle provided privacy from prying eyes and protection from enemy fire, the tunnels under Dover Castle have served a strategic military role from Napoleonic times. Using artefacts, interactive elements, moving real life stories, striking images and original wartime film footage this new exhibition traces the history of the tunnels across the centuries. Highly educational but absolutely fascinating, with some potentially upsetting content, like a box of fragments from Nagaskai and Hiroshima, but these can fairly easily be passed by.

Immersive new exhibits use state-of-the-art effects and real film footage to bring the spirit of Dunkirk to life in operation Dynamo! It's exciting stuff for amateur historians and general little warmongers, but the sensitive sort may not enjoy this part. The Underground Hospital is equally atmospheric and it's unclear form the site what the sound effects contain, so if you've got nervous types it might be another one to either check out first or skim over.

Access to the Wartime Tunnels is on the Dover Castle Ticket so doesn't cost any extra. You can also explore the winding medieval tunnels built around 1216 and burrowed deep beneath the castle, an interesting comparison to the more modern version which they surely inspired!
