About

Waltham Abbey Gardens is a truly magical and award winning site steeped in history and set in the grounds of the old Abbey, founded by King Henry II in 1177. The remains of this Abbey can still be seen today, including the gate house and the passage from the cloisters to the sleeping quarters. Come and enjoy a relaxing day with a family picnic and take in the sights and sounds of the wider countryside with wonderful walks along the Cornmill Stream.

Why not explore the old orchard which is home to traditional varieties of apples. In the autumn as the apples ripen visitors are encouraged to sample the delights of this community space. Explore the wonderful Cornmill Meadows Dragonfly Sanctuary a Site of Special Scientific Interest, where over half the Britain's native species of dragonfly can be see between May and September.

Close by, the historic market town also boasts a museum, shops and an excellent range of restaurants, cafes and pubs. The church, much of it dating back to the 12th century, is located on the edge of the Gardens. In the market town you'll find 16th century timber framed buildings and the art nouveau Town Hall, a testament to how the town's history has evolved.
