About

The Jane Austen Centre is a permanent exhibition telling the story of Jane Austen's time in the city of Bath, and the influence that it had on her writing. There are costumes, a film, live guides, and a number of exhibits to discover. There is also a Regency Tearoom on the second floor, with serving staff in period costume!

The centre is the perfect starting point when exploring Jane Austen's Bath, with knowledgeable staff, a lovely period atmosphere, maps, books, and more to discover, including a waxwork of Jane Austen, created using forensic evidence. Learn about Jane's time in the city between 1801 and 1806, and the effect that it had on her writing. She even lived on the same street that now houses the Centre!

The Centre also has an excellent Dressing Up section where visitors can try on Regency clothing, including bonnets, dresses, top hats, shawls, coats, fans, and parasols. Friendly members of staff are always on hand to offer advice and tips on how to wear the various items, and they will also take your picture using your own camera, suggesting good places to stand for an authentic shot. This part of the exhibition is extremely popular, so the centre will be increasing the number of items available to include Spencer jackets and various dresses.

Great fun! The centre also offers 90 minute Walking Tours every weekend that take you past the places made famous by Austen and her characters in the novels ‘Persuasion' and ‘Northanger Abbey'.
