About

The Holbourne Museum is for those visiting with children it's best to first note that although it may sound a little dry" for kids, there are actually lots of hands-on activities in the Museum to keep them happy, including an animal trail! There's also agreat range of Families' and Children's Workshops featuring songs, play, sensory exploration and creative activities designed for a range of ages. Regular workshops include Brilliant Babes (for under 9 monts old); Monday and Tuesday Yearlings (for 12 to 24 months old); Morning and Afternoon Toddlealongs (for 2 to 5 year olds); plus regular special sessions which compliment the seasonally varying temporary exhibitions which they are also so renowned for.

All in all a terrific range and well worth booking in advance as they're justifiably popular, being free! For older kids and adults' purposes, the root of the grand Holburne Museum is the extravagant collection of Sir William Holburne, 5th Baronet of Menstrie, who left the navy after inheriting significant funds to embark on a lengthy adventure across Europe instead! Staying in Italy, the Alps and the Netherlands sparked an enthusiasm for collecting and although he left it all to the City of Bath for us to enjoy it has continued to grow, with some 2000 more features added to it since!

There are exquisite portrait miniatures, porcelain, embroideries and portraits by some of the greatest artists of the eighteenth century, all of which is very pleasing to the eye for kids and good for stirring the imagination, so do be sure to check the whole place out once you've been to the fun Family Workshop!
