About

The Cater Museum is a distinctly educational stop but a particularly fun one for imaginative kids who can get their history fix and let the daydreams run! It houses many historical artefacts pertinent to Billericay and contains a lot of local information, which is ideal for school aged kids who are researching the period. The 18th to 19th century red brick building is tiled and has dormer windows, one of which depicts the war time practice of applying tape to reduce flying glass.

The centre window of the first floor is bricked up, this is a reminder of the window tax and an excellent chance to explain it to them: go secret schooling! Within the three floor building you will find authentic and atmospheric rooms to explore including a mid Victorian parlour, boudoir and kitchen, as well as a detailed and educational World War II exhibition along with other interesting displays. Its not a full day's worth but a worthwhile stop!

Outdoors you can explore the period herb and kitchen gardens as well as peek in the well, but they're currently working on the outside area so access may vary.

Good for: older children, teenagers, young children
