Steeple Grange Light Railway - Photo 1

About

Established back in sunny 1985, the Steeple Grange Light Railway is a charming 18 inch gauge railway line built on a branch trackbed of the old Cromford and High Peak Railway, which is known these days as the High Peak Trail. Power is provided by a variety of ex-industrial diesel, battery-electric and petrol locomotives, and happy passengers shortly to include your good selves are ferried along in an old National Coal Board man rider! A true chuffhead's delight.

When you visit the railway you can enjoy a scenic and unique twenty minute train jaunt through dramatic limestone scenery; hear all about how and why the railway was built and learn its plans for the future! Plus investigate some vintage locomotives and rolling stock and see work in progress on the extensions towards Middleton and the National Stone Centre, where you can discover fossils of brachiopods and crinoids amongst the wild flowers: cool! If you keep 'em peeled a little way from the station you'll also stand a decent chance of seeing rabbits, foxes, voles and barn owls!

If you've got older kids who are really into their chuff stuff then why not have a look at joining them up to the SGLR Society which carries a great number of benefits and experiences beneficial to trainspotters and enthusiasts.

Good for: babies toddlers, older children, young children
