About
Silbury Hill, known as the English pyramid, is the largest man-made mound in Europe! The mysterious Silbury Hill compares in height and volume to it's roughly contemporary Egyptian pyramids completed in around 2400 BC. It apparently contains no burial so intriguingly nobody knows who did it, why, or what might be buried underneath...
Though clearly important in itself, its purpose and significance remain unknown in modern times. It has been designated an Avebury World Heritage Site, a Scheduled Ancient Monument and a Site of Special Scientific Interest. There is no access to the hill itself and frankly folks, whatever it was in the making, now it's just a hill.
It is a cool hill however with a little mystery attached so if you're driving past it on the way to something more exciting why not stop off and point it out to the munchkins? There's a small amount of free car parking on hand and you may walk your dogs in the surrounding area (but not up the hill) so it could be a good stop to stretch everyone's legs mid journey! Why not take a pad and pencil each and compare ideas of who made it and what for, or what could be buried in the centre!
Great for getting little imaginations going.
Good for: older children, teenagers, young children
