Sandal Castle stands in a commanding position overlooking the River Calder and Yorkshire countryside. The motte and bailey castle has been extensively excavated, and finds can be seen in the Visitor Centre, which also contains displays about the history of the castle. You can also find out more at the nearby Wakefield Museum, which is located on Wood Street.
Remains of the 13th century stone castle and the fine motte and bailey can be seen on site. Visitors can walk around the site for free, exploring these romantic ruins that include steps into the moat, and you can also climb to the top of the motte, where you will be rewarded with superb views of the Calder Valley. If you would like to know more, castle staff run a tour at 14:00 every day they are open, which gives a great introduction to the ruins, and the rich history of the castle.
It is a good idea to wear sensible footwear. Please also be aware that the tour involves steep steps. The tours can become full during busy periods, so please check before you travel there.
A family trail can be downloaded in advance to take with you, plus there are a number of events and activities to enjoy throughout the year.
