Outdoor Family Adventures in Plymouth
Thirteen outdoor listings, and Plymouth's fall into three groups that barely resemble one another. Water at the edge of the city: Tinside Lido and Mount Wise Swimming Pool. Green space to be turned loose in: West Hoe Park and Surfing Cow Farm. And things built by somebody with a plan: Crownhill Fort, Saltram House and Gardens, Plym Valley Railway and Plymouth Miniature Steam. A family perfectly happy in any one of those three groups would often be miserable in another, which is unusual for a list this short.
Thirteen options sounds thin until you notice how little they overlap. That is a virtue — it means the choice is a genuine choice, rather than picking between four versions of the same afternoon.
Outdoor activities in Plymouth: FAQs
What should we know before planning an outdoor swim?
That an open-air pool runs to its own calendar and its own conditions, neither of which we hold. Session times, whether a child needs an adult in the water with them, and how cold it actually is on the day are all questions for the pool itself. Ask before you drive over with towels, and keep a land-based alternative in mind for the answer you did not want.
What works with a toddler in tow?
Open ground with a boundary. West Hoe Park asks nothing of a toddler except that they walk about, and Surfing Cow Farm adds animals, which hold attention at an age when a view does not. The engineered attractions are better from about five upwards, when a child can follow what they are looking at rather than simply being taken to see it.
Is there anything here for a machine-obsessed child?
Plym Valley Railway and Plymouth Miniature Steam exist for exactly that interest and neither pretends otherwise. Crownhill Fort applies the same instinct to defences rather than engines. These are strong choices for the right child and thin ones for the wrong child, so ask at home first rather than hoping the atmosphere carries it.
How many of these have shelter?
Four of the thirteen have indoor space attached: Saltram House and Gardens and Crownhill Fort included. That makes those the safer bets when the forecast cannot commit. The parks and the pools have no such fallback, which is worth remembering before you drive out under an uncertain sky.
