Rainy Day Activities in Margate

Margate's indoor list is tiny and slightly strange, in a good way. The Shell Grotto and The WonderWorks are curiosities, places you go to be puzzled by something, while The Escapement Margate hands a family an actual problem to solve. Turner Contemporary is a gallery and behaves like one. Five listings, and not one of them is the standard soft-play-and-bowling combination that most towns offer.

Four of the five are recorded indoors only, so this is a dependable page in bad weather. It is not, however, a page for a child set on running about. That is the trade-off with a list built out of galleries and oddities.

Indoor activities in Margate: FAQs

Anything here for a child who needs to move?

Not really, and better to know that before setting out. The Escapement Margate at least gives a child something to do with their hands and their head, and an escape room has a timer, which helps. Otherwise this list is built around looking and thinking. If somebody needs to burn energy, plan for that separately rather than hoping a gallery will manage it.

What age do the curiosities work at?

The Shell Grotto and The WonderWorks both rely on a child being old enough to be curious about something they cannot immediately explain, which tends to mean from about six or seven. Younger ones can enjoy them but will take less away. Both are recorded indoors only, and it is worth reading on the venue's own site what a visit actually involves.

Does the gallery work with children?

Turner Contemporary does better than parents expect, largely because a gallery is a big, calm, open room and children respond to that even when the art itself passes them by. It is indoors only. Look up what is currently showing and whether anything is running for families, since that varies and it makes a considerable difference to how long a visit lasts.
