The Gower coast supplies most of Swansea's free list. Rhossili Bay Beach, Langland Bay Beach and Oxwich Bay Beach are three of the best-known beaches in Wales and none of them costs anything to walk onto. Blackpill Lido adds outdoor water closer to the city, and National Waterfront Museum is the single indoor entry, covering Welsh industrial history down at the marina. Which Gower beach is most practical with children?
Langland Bay Beach is the closest to the city and the easiest to reach, which counts for a lot when the car is full of buckets and someone needs the toilet. Rhossili Bay Beach is spectacular and involves a significant walk down and, more to the point, back up. Oxwich Bay Beach sits between the two. Match the walk to the youngest legs rather than to the photographs.
What is at the Waterfront Museum?
National Waterfront Museum covers industry and innovation in Wales, which sounds like an adult subject and works better with children than expected because so much of it is machinery. It is also the only entry on this list with a guaranteed roof, so it earns its place as the wet-weather fallback. As a national museum it keeps regular hours, though these vary on public holidays.
Is the lido open all year?
Blackpill Lido is an outdoor water facility, and those almost universally run a warm-weather season with hours that shift year to year and close entirely outside it. It is therefore not something to build a plan around without checking first. Water play areas of this kind also tend to be busiest at exactly the times they are most appealing, which is worth factoring into when you arrive.
