Free Family Days Out in Liverpool
Liverpool is unusual on this list for being weighted indoors: eleven of its fifteen no-charge entries have a roof, against seven outdoors. The city's civic museums are the reason. Walker Art Gallery, Museum of Liverpool, Victoria Gallery and Museum and St. George's Hall all sit in the free bracket, which is a genuinely different proposition from a list made of parks. Outdoors you still get Sefton Park, Formby Beach and Antony Gormleys Another Place, so a bright day is not wasted either.
Few cities let you fill a wet day this cheaply. If the forecast is bad, Liverpool is one of the places where that stops being a problem and starts being a reason to go.
Free days out in Liverpool: FAQs
Could we do more than one of these in a day?
In the city centre, yes, and it is one of the few places on this site where that is realistic. Several of the free museums sit within a short walk of each other, so a morning in one and an hour in another is a normal afternoon rather than an ambitious one. Formby Beach and Antony Gormleys Another Place are a different matter: they are a journey out and back, and they want the whole day rather than a slot in it.
Are the museums manageable with a toddler?
Big civic buildings are usually better for very small children than people expect, because there is floor space, there are lifts, and nobody minds a slow lap. What they will not give you is somewhere to run. If the toddler in question needs to burn something off first, Sefton Park before the museum works far better than the museum before the park, and it costs you nothing to reorder the day.
What is worth knowing about the beach entries?
Tide, wind and parking, in that order. A coastal listing that reads as free at the gate can still involve a car park charge and a long walk from it, and the character of the visit changes completely between a low tide and a high one. Check the tide times for the day rather than assuming, and take more layers than the forecast suggests, because the wind off the water is not the wind in the city.
