Free Family Days Out in Helston
Two farms and three stretches of coast make up the free listings around Helston, and none of the five is recorded as indoor. Cornish Camels and Roskillys are the farm entries, both working sites rather than built attractions. Kynance Cove is the famous one, serpentine rock and turquoise water on the Lizard; Poldhu Cove Beach and Kennack Sands are the quieter alternatives. Everything here happens outside, which makes this a page for a settled forecast.
The farms give you somewhere to go when the coast is unpleasant, but nothing here has a roof. Treat a bad forecast as a reason to use a different page entirely.
Free days out in Helston: FAQs
Is Kynance Cove manageable with young children?
Kynance Cove is reached by a walk down from the car park and, more importantly, a walk back up, and the beach itself is affected substantially by the tide. It is one of the most photographed places in Cornwall and it is not a convenient one. With a toddler it is hard work; with children who can walk it is worth the effort. Check the tide before setting out rather than after arriving.
What sort of farms are these?
Cornish Camels and Roskillys are working sites where the farming is the attraction, rather than farm parks built around play equipment. That usually means animals to see, somewhere to eat and a shop, with the day costing what you choose to spend rather than what you pay at a gate. Opening at sites like this is often seasonal, and the animals are not on a timetable, so expectations are worth managing.
Which beach is the practical choice?
Poldhu Cove Beach and Kennack Sands are both easier propositions than the famous cove, with more straightforward access and fewer people looking for the same parking space. On the Lizard the roads are narrow and the car parks fill early in summer, so arriving early matters more than choosing correctly. Neither should be assumed to have lifeguard cover on any given day.
