Free Family Days Out in Great Yarmouth

Every one of Great Yarmouth's seven free listings is a beach, and none is indoor. Great Yarmouth Pier Beach, Great Yarmouth North Beach, Great Yarmouth South Beach, South Denes Beach, Hemsby Beach, California Beach and Power Station Beach Great Yarmouth are the whole list. That makes the choice here unusually simple and unusually weather-dependent: this page is either the answer to your day or no use at all, and the forecast decides which.

There is no wet-weather version of this list. On a good day the sand is free and endless; on a bad one you need a different page altogether.

Free days out in Great Yarmouth: FAQs

How do these beaches differ from each other?

Mainly in how busy they are and how far you walk from the car. The stretches nearest the town centre come with everything a resort seafront has and the crowds that go with it, while Hemsby Beach and California Beach sit further out and feel emptier. Facilities follow the same pattern, so a family needing toilets and food nearby should stay central and one wanting space should not.

What should we take?

More clothing than the temperature suggests, because the wind on this coast is the thing that ends beach days rather than rain. Beyond that: something to sit on, water, and food, since walking back for supplies is what turns a cheap day expensive. Sun protection matters even on an overcast day here, and there is very little natural shade on any of these stretches once you are down on the sand.

Is it safe to swim?

That is not something a directory can answer for a given day, and it would be irresponsible to try. Conditions on this coast change with wind and tide, and lifeguard cover is seasonal and varies by beach. Check the signage when you arrive, look for the flags, and keep children in sight and in shallow water. If nothing on the beach tells you it is supervised, treat it as unsupervised.
