Free Family Days Out in Brighton

Six free listings in Brighton, and the seafront takes three of them. Brighton Beach, Brighton Pier and Brighton Marina are the ones everybody already knows about, and all three are as much a place to walk as a place to do something. Inland, Preston Park is the large green space and Kings Road Playground the equipment. Booth Museum of Natural History is the single indoor collection, and it is a Victorian natural history museum, which is a very specific pleasure.

The seafront is free to walk and expensive to stand still on. That is not a criticism of Brighton, just the thing to prepare children for before you get there.

Free days out in Brighton: FAQs

Is the pier free?

Walking onto Brighton Pier is a different thing from what is on it. The structure itself and the walk along it are open, while the rides and machines are individually paid for and are precisely what a child will want the moment they see them. Decide the answer before you arrive rather than at the point of asking, because a pier is not a place where a negotiation goes well.

What is the Booth Museum like?

Booth Museum of Natural History is a nineteenth-century collection presented in a nineteenth-century way, which means cases of mounted birds and skeletons rather than interactive screens. Children who like bones and specimens find it fascinating; children expecting buttons to press do not. It is small enough that a visit which is not working ends painlessly, and it is the only indoor entry here.

Which is better with a toddler, the beach or the park?

Preston Park and Kings Road Playground, almost always. A pebble beach is hard work for short legs, the sea needs constant watching, and there is nowhere for a buggy to go. A park asks nothing of you except attention. Save the seafront for a day when the weather makes it obviously worth it, or for children old enough to enjoy the stones rather than trip over them.
