About
Wincobank Hill offers superb views over Sheffield and is made up of a mixture of heathland, woodland and open ground so there is plenty of space for the kids to run about and ramble. An Iron Age hill fort, consisting of a rampart and ditch, occupies a commanding position on the hilltop and many other historic features have also been found in the woodland, such as the remains of a Roman Ridge. There is ancient coppice woodland on the western slopes of the hill, called Wincobank Wood.
This woodland is full of interesting birds to spot, such as Willow Warblers, Blackcaps and Song Thrushes. Birdwatchers bring your binoculars! There are some free downloadable guides online that provide loads of interesting information about the woodland, hill and the fort.
The visitor guide is pretty comprehensive, plus there are two rambler trails available too. There is also an education pack, designed especially for kids, packed full of details about the whole area.
Good for: all ages, babies toddlers, older children, teenagers, young children
