About

Wheata Woods is over 600 years old and full of history as well as wildlife. There are a number of bridlepaths and trails to follow plus the northern area of the woodland has the Trans Penine Trail running through it. There are loads of different trees to spot such as oaks, silver birch, holly and rowan, some of which are pretty old.

Bird watchers should look out for redwings, tits, willow warblers and chiffchaffs, plus sparrowhawks, goldcrests and the great spotted woodpecker. Kids will love exploring this amazing woodland and looking out for the various archaeological spots, which include medieval pits, a millstone quarry, bomb craters, and ancient farm settlements. If possible, download the online guides for this woodland, including an Archaeological Trail guide full of fascinating facts.

An interesting and beautiful place to take the family and enjoy nature at any time of the year as there is always something new to see.
