5 Best Activities In Port Talbot

5 family-friendly attractions in Port Talbot, Glamorgan and Cardiff

Four out of five entries here happen in the open air, and three of the four share a name. Margam Country Park, Margam Park Adventure and Go Ape Margam occupy the same estate, which turns a single destination into most of a day. The other version of the trip is the sea at Aberavon Beach. Only the South Wales Miners Museum puts a roof over your head.

This is a fine-weather list and it does not pretend otherwise. One estate, one beach and one museum reads thin on paper. The estate by itself, though, is large enough to hold a family for a full day without repeating a path.

Visiting Port Talbot with kids: FAQs

What can families do at Margam?

Three separate entries carry the Margam name and they do quite different jobs. Margam Country Park is the parkland and playground side. Margam Park Adventure is the activity centre. Go Ape Margam is high ropes, for children tall enough to be harnessed in properly. All three are outdoors and all three operate separately, so if you are travelling any distance, confirm which are running on your chosen day.

Is there anything to do in Port Talbot if it rains?

Honestly, not much. The South Wales Miners Museum is the only entry in the town with a covered element, and a museum is not somewhere children charge about. The other four are all open-air. A wet day here means either putting waterproofs on and accepting the beach as it is, or driving towards Cardiff and the wider county to find something under a roof.

Is Aberavon Beach good for children?

Aberavon Beach is the most straightforward family outing the town has: sand, room and a promenade to scoot along. Like any open beach on this coastline it is exposed, so wind matters considerably more than temperature when you are deciding whether to go. Nothing needs booking, which is what makes it the easy fallback on a day that has already gone sideways on you.
