Outdoor Family Adventures in Scarborough
Two of Scarborough's eleven outdoor listings are filed as beaches, and that label hides a great deal. Cayton Bay and Hayburn Wyke Beach share a category on this page and are not the same proposition once you arrive. The rest of the list divides the same way. Peasholm Park, North Bay Railway Scarborough and Scarborough Castle are all outdoors, all in one town, and all ask something different of a child.
Sort this list by effort rather than by category and Scarborough gets much easier to plan. One demanding thing a day is plenty when the youngest is still being carried for part of it.
Outdoor activities in Scarborough: FAQs
Is the category label enough to choose on?
Not on a list like this one. Beaches, sightseeing and parks each cover an enormous spread, and our record holds the category and the flags rather than the texture of an actual visit. Hayburn Wyke Beach and Cayton Bay carry the same label as one another and suit quite different sorts of day. Look up the individual site rather than the category before handing it a whole morning.
Which are the gentle options?
Peasholm Park and North Bay Railway Scarborough are the least demanding entries here, in the sense that arriving is most of the work. Scarborough Castle sits at the other end of that scale. Our listing records neither ground conditions nor how much climbing is involved, so where somebody in the group tires quickly, a call to the site beats a guess made from a category name.
Three of the eleven are on the indoor list too. What does that buy us?
A hedge, and nothing stronger than that. The Scarborough Fair Collection and Alpamare Water Park appear under both flags, which normally means a roof over some of it. That can be the difference between abandoning a plan and shortening it. It can also mean one small covered room and a great deal of standing about, so it pays to ask which it is.
The forecast is mixed. How would you order the day?
Put the thing that suffers most from rain first, while the sky is behaving, and hold the sheltered end of the list in reserve. Betton Farm Visitor Centre and Peasholm Park both survive a grey hour reasonably well. A castle in driving rain is a short visit and a long argument, so it belongs in the morning slot rather than the afternoon one.
