Rainy Day Activities in South Shields
South Shields sits where the Tyne meets the North Sea, with sand on one side, a working river mouth on the other and cliffs in between. It is a seaside town first, so the entries gathered here exist mainly as the answer to a question the sea keeps asking: what do we do when the wind arrives off the water and the beach becomes unbearable?
Seven answer it. Haven Point holds the town's swimming, The Dunes Adventure Island, Laser Force and The Little Play Cafe cover play across three different age bands, and Arbeia Roman Fort and South Shields Museum and Art Gallery take the history.
On a coast like this the forecast rearranges the plan more than it would inland, so keep one of these in reserve every time you head for the sand. The play venues in particular run booked sessions, so check first rather than driving down hopeful.
Indoor activities in South Shields: FAQs
Which of these is the true bad-weather backup?
Haven Point, South Shields Museum and Art Gallery, The Dunes Adventure Island, Laser Force and The Little Play Cafe are sheltered throughout, so any of the five will keep you dry. The choice is age rather than shelter: the cafe suits the smallest children, the adventure centre the middle years, and the laser arena the ones who want to compete.
Is the pleasure park really an indoor option?
Our records flag Ocean Beach Pleasure Park as having covered space, and that does not match what a seafront funfair actually is. Treat it as an outdoor attraction with sheltered corners, and do not build a washout day around it. Their own page lists what is running, which on a coastal site changes with the wind as much as with the season.
Does the Roman fort work with young children?
Arbeia Roman Fort is logged as covered and open at once, and stands up on the bank above the river mouth where the weather finds you. The reconstructed buildings give younger children something solid to look at instead of a plan marked out on the ground, which helps a great deal. Even so, expect to be outside for part of it and look up what is open ahead of the visit.
We have children at very different stages. Can one place cover them?
Probably not, and this page is honest about that. The Little Play Cafe is pitched at the pre-school end, The Dunes Adventure Island at primary-age climbing, and Laser Force at children who want a game with rules. Neither of the latter two carries a visitor rating on our records, so ring ahead and ask about minimum ages and whether a younger sibling can be accommodated.
