Rainy Day Activities in Skipton
Skipton exists to be the way into the Dales. The high street runs up towards the castle, the Leeds and Liverpool canal cuts straight through the middle, and the hills start almost immediately in every direction. On a clear day nobody stays in the town. On a bad one, staying in the town is the plan.
Eight listings carry the indoor flag. Craven Museum and Gallery, Coffee and Clay and Matrix Superbowl are the ones that work when the tops are in cloud. Skipton Castle is unusually well roofed for a castle, and Hesketh Farm Park and Thornton Hall Country Park take you back out into the farmland with some covered space to retreat to.
A gateway town is a good place to be stuck. Half this list holds up in poor weather and half needs the sky to cooperate — read the flags on each listing, then confirm hours with the venue.
Indoor activities in Skipton: FAQs
What is worth doing if the Dales are washed out?
Craven Museum and Gallery and Coffee and Clay are both in town and both work regardless of what the hills are doing, one for looking and one for making. Matrix Superbowl covers a group who want to compete instead. Between them they will hold an afternoon, and none of them requires the drive up onto the moor that a clear day would tempt you into.
Is the castle really an indoor visit?
Skipton Castle is far better preserved than most, which is why it carries an indoor flag alongside an outdoor one, and a good deal of a visit is spent in roofed rooms and stairs rather than open ruins. It is still a medieval building, so expect cold stone and uneven footing. The castle sets out its own visiting arrangements and those are the version to plan around.
Are the farm parks any use when it rains?
Up to a point. Hesketh Farm Park and Thornton Hall Country Park both carry indoor and outdoor flags, which usually means covered barns and play alongside open fields. That makes them a reasonable bet in showers and a harder one in sustained rain. Ring the farm the morning you plan to go, since what is open on a working farm changes with the season and the ground.
Anything on or near the canal?
Skipton Boat Trips is on this list and is tied to the canal that runs through the middle of the town. A boat is a different sort of shelter to a building, and how much cover you get depends on the vessel and the trip. Ask the operator what you are booking onto and what happens in poor weather rather than assuming.
