The Monument, one of the city's best loved attractions, offers amazing panoramic views over London. 5m) high,The Monument was built to commemorate the Great Fire, which devastated London in 1666, and it is the tallest isolated stone column in the world! It was designed by Robert Hooke and Sir Christopher Wren, and built out of Portland stone, comprising of a simple fluted Doric column topped by a flaming urn of copper gilded with 2 layers of gold leaf to symbolise the Great Fire.
It is positioned at the junction of Monument Street and Fish Hill, close to the spot in Pudding Lane on which the Great Fire is believed to have started.
