Thurrock Museum

Thurrock Museum welcomes families to explore the history of Thurrock through it's extensive exhibits and artefacts with a rich variety of items on show at a nice height for school aged kids. Plus every summer they run family heritage rambles outside, ideal for exploring the vicinity. There are 40 permanent display cases and 20 more which vary regularly to keep things fresh, containing in total over 1,500 fascinating regionally significant objects, dating as far back as 250,000 years.

Kids can marvel at the size of the mammoths from Aveley, get their treasure fix studying the earliest known Thurrock coins dating to 75bc, imagine the uses of the Prehistoric Flint tools, plus see Roman Pottery, Saxon artifacts and several medieval finds from Grays itself! Other highlights include a heavy horse harness, a Victorian post box, leather fireman's pipe and railway notices. While they don't do valuations their friendly research staff are happy to offer free advice and information collections and object identification if you've found anything ancient looking yourselves!

The surrounding area is well worth exploring with 239 listed buildings and 15 buildings of acknowledged national importance within a hop and a skip of the museum.
